Desired Qualifications:
The fellow will be committed to pursue a career in geriatrics either as a primary focus or as an area of added specialty in conjunction with an interest in primary care or academic medicine. Applicants should have completed an Internal Medicine or Family Practice residency and be board certified or board eligible in their specialty.
Content of Fellowship:
This fully accredited fellowship program focuses on the development of skills required to meet the teaching, research, service, and administrative responsibilities associated with academic medicine or the ascertainment of the necessary clinical and administrative skills associated with geriatric program development and the provision of continuing care of elderly patients. The training program benefits from the full resources of Tucson and Southern Arizona, including the University of Arizona College of Medicine and Arizona Health Science Center, the Southern Arizona VA Health Care Center, University Physicians Healthcare Hospital, the Tucson Long-Term Care Medical Group, the Arizona Center on Aging, and the Arizona Geriatric Education Center. In addition, the fellows benefit from the activities of the Arizona Reynolds Program of Applied Geriatrics and the Arizona Geriatric Education Center. All fellows will participate in a scholarly activity. Fellows with special interest in nursing home administration will have the opportunity to receive advanced training through the American Medical Directors Association. Fellows who obtain board certification in either Internal Medicine or Family Medicine and complete the fellowship will be eligible to sit for the specialty boards in geriatric medicine certification examination offered by either the American Board of Internal Medicine or the American Board of Family Practice, and be qualified to enter practice without direct supervision .
Goals of One-Year Clinical Geriatric Medicine Fellowship:
- To develop advanced knowledge and skills in the clinical management of geriatric patients.
- To acquire skills in the teaching of geriatric medicine.
- To acquire skills in scholarly activities.
- To develop administrative skills in the management of programs that provides comprehensive medical services for the elderly.
